Local Award-Winning Winery Adds New Partners with Plans of Expansion
The Powell Village Winery, a thriving urban winery located in quaint downtown Powell, is adding new partners to the tasting room. Ken and Dana Waldron of Powell will take over operational control in early December, along with all the events and community outreach the winery has become so well known for; while current owners, Jeff & Gina Kirby of Powell, focus their efforts on additional locations.
"We are super excited to be able to bring in a great local couple like Ken and Dana to help carry the torch for this business," says Jeff. He and his wife, Gina, opened the winery in 2011 that has become a staple in the community.
"Gina and I are still going to be very involved, especially with the wine side of the business. I will continue to develop the same great wines for the winery and you’ll see us there quite often," Jeff added.
The Kirby's and the Waldron's have become close friends over the past five years. Dana was one of the first employees hired by Jeff and Gina in early 2012. She spent over 3 years as the tasting room manager and became a patron favorite in there.
"Getting Dana back in this tasting room is amazing," Jeff said. "Our guests just loved her; and her husband, Ken, is one of the best people you could ever meet. We wouldn't do this deal with just anyone. Dana and Ken were the perfect people to partner with on this."
Ken, Dana and their two boys, Owen and Oliver, have been residents of Powell for 18 years and really love the community and local, hometown feel that Powell exudes; the winery plays a major part in that.
"I truly love in here (the winery)," Dana said. "I left my manager role at the winery in 2015 to pursue another career but realized quickly that my heart was with the winery and I just knew I was going to be back involved at one point or another."
Dana’s husband Ken echoed a similar sentiment. “We have enjoyed every moment we’ve spent in that tasting room.” Ken mentioned. “We are extremely excited to carry the torch and continue the great success the winery has had.”
The winery has grown considerably every year since 2011 with Jeff and Gina handling both the tasting room operations and the winemaking operations.
"The success of this winery has exceeded all of our expectations," Gina said. "Keeping up with the winemaking side and the tasting room side of the business has become a major undertaking so having Dana and Ken taking over control of the tasting room piece is the perfect recipe for continued success."
When asked why they were making this change to the business, Jeff responded, "We have plans to expand this urban craft winery business model with other locations and this will allow us the time to focus on that expansion, as well as focus a lot more time on producing great wines.”
It sure sounds like the Powell Village Winery will continue to be in great hands in the coming future. I can tell you first hand the Waldron's are a great couple and are so excited for this new venture in their life. They have plans to expand the tasting room space to allow for private parties during open hours, as well as, add some additional seating, an updated patio and the hot new trend of wines of tap. They will officially be serving you in the tasting room starting next week and it’s a wonderful time of year to visit the tasting room, so be sure to swing by and wish them continued success.
